About Volunteering
Volunteerism (voluntarism or the act of becoming a volunteer) is the not really an act of charity, as goes the common misconception. It can be a form of charitable act, but most people who put in their own time, their own talents, and their own efforts to a certain cause usually do so out of willingness to work on others’ behalf; or the fact that they believe that their efforts are something really worth giving. This has nothing to do with beliefs, religious insights or so-called rewards in the next “sphere of consciousness” (as with the case with what most charitable acts.) Often, many people from very different ethnic, religious and racial backgrounds get together to offer whatever services they can render for one volunteer organization.
Another misconception on volunteerism goes that people are not paid. On one part, this is true. Volunteers do not ask for monetary compensations, and are therefore not expected to get paid nor ask for payment in return. But many are compensated in other ways, depending on the organization that they are working for, or the situation where they are in. Food, water and shelter are forms of compensations. The same goes for the chance to travel or be a part of a working community where one can learn the ropes of a particular business. Others are compensated via introduction to other people who may be working for the same goal or objective. Etc.
There are numerous volunteer programs right in the town, city or state where you live in. For example, hospital volunteers are still pretty much welcome in your area or nearby vicinity. Teachers, city guides and rescuers could find their freely offered services invaluable for organizations that deal with children, with tourists and with health-and-rescue operations. Some volunteers work in particular offices, offering assistance to whatever task is at hand (i.e. employment offices in need of clerical assistants.) Some people work regularly in soup kitchens or day care centers (for both children and the elderly.) If you want to offer your services for such programs, it would be best to check out your local parish, or your local government office, or the nearest hospital to see what tasks are being offered to willing personnel.
