Volunteer in Africa

Africa is a wonderful land of promise. However wonderful that promise is though, this culturally rich and historical country is still in need of a great deal of helping hands. Volunteering work in Africa has been in effect for as long as time itself; but these days, an international volunteer is usually given the option to help hyper specific programs that can enrich both human lives, and the endangered wildlife of the country. Many programs that cater to such enterprises welcome students and professionals from various fields of study in order to learn, take part and finally contribute a little something to the people of Africa. If you are thinking of volunteering your services, here are some things to consider first and foremost.

1. Go to the World Wide Web and simply type in volunteer opportunity in Africa (or something to that effect.) Once the results page comes up, you will notice immediately that there will be a lot of websites dedicated primarily to entice an international volunteer, such as yourself, to take the long voyage to the country. However, before you actually choose the one you think suits you most, it would be best to look through the long list of volunteer programs each and every volunteer organization has. Depending on what your preferences are, some volunteer programs may actually appeal more to you if you know precisely what such projects would demand from you. Learn everything there is to learn about what the programs entail and the actual location you are to be assigned to. This might help greatly if you are to spend the next few days or weeks or months learning the ropes in Africa.

2. The location of where these programs are supposed to be held should also be a note of interest in your books. As many of you know, the culture and local laws of Africa is as diverse as its numerous tribes and municipalities. There is no general code of ethics for all locales, so it would be best if you are acquainted with the local culture and the governing politics as well. There are also geographical concerns you should be acquainted with especially if you are dealing with programs for children’s education, or rehabilitation of communities or for rescue volunteerism during times of calamities. Knowing broad and limited ecosystems for various specific locations is quite important if you want to volunteer for nature reserve preservation programs or even the preservation of specific animals.

3. Be earth friendly and culture conscious. Africa is becoming quite adamant in the preservation of its nature resources, and so should you if you are indeed volunteering your services for a specific period of time. Try to buy regional products only to promote local trade and commerce; as opposed to buying imported goods. Also, there is a dire need to steer clear from buying products made from the local flora and fauna, especially if these are part of the endangered list of species. Some cultures can be a bit wary with foreigners, so learning a few key phrases like “Thank you” will be appreciated. Also, if you want to take photographs of people, you should be polite enough to ask first for permission before snapping away, even if you are only using a camera phone.
