Volunteer in UK
UK based volunteer programs are usually divided into two: the volunteer service projects for UK, and the programs dedicated to volunteer work overseas. As such we will tackle both singly in order to understand them better. But first thing’s first: in the UK, there is a difference between employee volunteer programs and charitable volunteer programs. The former can be considered as a temporary job placement scheme, while the latter is a way of offering help to organizations that do need volunteers for socially relevant projects. This article will focus on the latter, though.
Projects that are country based
There are a lot of volunteer opportunities for people who want to offer helping hands to a certain cause. The question is: are you living in UK already or are you living outside the country but would like to delve in volunteering work that will help you discover the country as well. As such, local volunteers have really got it made. It would be easy enough to get acquainted with a volunteer organization or two by simply checking out what local community service is in need of helping hands. There are also scores of websites dedicated to net bulletins, where locals can “advertise” their availability and willingness so that organizations can call on their listed numbers for support. Some people declare as to what work they are willing to do; others declare as to how much time can spare or exactly when they are available for such work (i.e. Christmas holidays.)
On the other hand, if you are a foreigner on your way to UK, it would be best to go through the proper channels before diving headlong into work. The proper channels would be international volunteer organizations from your country that specifically links to London based or UK based programs.
Some of the generic voluntary works include: helping the elderly for a specific period of time, working with handicapped children, working for hospice and health care institutions, and helping tourists find themselves on famous landmarks, etc. Most of the specified jobs in the generic category are really community based; and more often than not, you will find yourself working with a partner or a small group of people. People sometimes join such voluntary projects in order to meet local people, and the get to know the local cultures as well. With generic work, there are activities for very young children, aged 11 and below who can sign up for a few days activities (with parental consent, of course.)
More specialized works include: offering legal advice to members of charitable institutions; teaching basic sports techniques and maneuvers to children; helping with conservation and rehabilitation efforts within the country; and even helping rescue efforts during times of crises.
Projects that are out-of-the-country based
This is strictly for UK residents with legal UK status. Some of the projects herein also deal with volunteer work in other countries, particularly: Africa, Asia and certain parts of Europe. There are programs specifically cater to working individuals and to Gap travelers. The points of interest would have to rely on where exactly do the volunteers want to go; what their proffered contributions should be; and what international organization did they sign up with.
